5 things to know for your first Brazilian Jiu Jitsu class!

Are you thinking about trying Brazilian jiu jitsu but feeling a bit nervous about your first class? Don't worry! At Renzo Gracie Sammamish, we understand that starting something new can be intimidating, but we're here to make your introduction to jiu jitsu as welcoming and enjoyable as possible!

Whether you're a complete beginner, signing your child up for their first class, or looking for a women's self-defense course, here's what you can expect and how to prepare.

  1. Wear comfortable athletic clothing

Before stepping on the mats for the first time, you don't need to invest in a uniform or any gear right away. For your trial class wear something comfortable like athletic pants and a fitted T-shirt or rash guard. Loose or baggy clothes can get in the way, so wear something that allows you to move freely without excess fabric, and free of zippers and buttons. We have uniforms for you to use while you try your free week of classes with us, so you can try us out before committing to purchasing any gear! Once you fall in love with jiu jitsu, and we think you will, we will guide you on finding the right gear.

  1. Expect to learn at your own pace

Brazilian jiu jitsu is a journey. Don't feel pressured to know everything on day one. Our instructors will walk you through the basic techniques and make sure you feel comfortable. You'll be paired with partners who understand that you're new and will help you progress at your own speed. We specialize in classes for all levels, so whether you're four years old, a beginner adult, or a woman looking for self-defense, our curriculum is designed to fit your needs!

  1. Bring a positive, open mindset

Jiu jitsu is all about personal growth, and every class is a learning opportunity. Don't worry about being perfect, mistakes are part of the process! you will quickly discover that Brazilian jiu jitsu builds confidence, discipline, and mental resilience as much as it does physical skills.

Pro tip: Smile and have fun! The welcoming community at Renzo Gracie Sammamish are here to support you, and we want you to enjoy your journey!

  1. Hydrate and be ready to move

Jiu Jitsu can be a workout, so it is important to come hydrated and ready to move. Each class is unique where you will get to practice key movements and techniques, then test them with some higher intensity, training. Expect to move, sweat, and feel great after class. We suggest bringing a water bottle to class and drink plenty of fluids before, and after to stay hydrated.

  1. Ask questions – we're here to help

One of the best parts about training at Renzo Gracie Sammamish is the welcome welcoming family like atmosphere. We encourage our students to ask questions!
